What is Adventure Play Pods?
Adventure Play Pods is a movement and learning play platform in development for children aged 3 and up. Wireless, light-up PODs act as physical controllers: children answer tasks by choosing a location and hitting the device.
A POD can stand for a colour, a number, an animal or a place in a story. The game gives it meaning. The same set of devices can therefore support a short sequence challenge and an adventure with a narrator, music and tasks.
From instruction to response
- Prepare the space. An adult arranges the PODs and any materials required by the game, then checks that the child understands what the targets represent.
- Listen and look. Light, sound or a narrator introduces the task. The child works out what to look for.
- Choose and act. The child reaches the chosen POD and hits it in the way specified for that device version and game.
- See the result. The game recognises the hit and gives feedback. The next task moves the activity or story forward.
A play concept in development: the narrator asks, “Where is the triangle?” The child finds the triangle on the themed material and hits its POD. In another adventure, that same POD might represent a planet. This example explains the interaction; the availability of individual missions depends on their development stage.
What makes up the system?
PODs
Wireless devices with LED lights and hit detection. The project uses Bluetooth and rechargeable batteries with USB-C charging. Detailed specifications depend on the hardware version.
The app and content
In Adventures, the app handles content and audio. Narration, music and the rules of each task make up a themed play pack.
Mats and individual bases
Themed materials give each location meaning. The project includes mats and a developing concept for separate illustrated bases. Required materials depend on the game.
More worlds
Changing the adventure gives the PODs new tasks. Device count and content compatibility need to match the individual game; modes may have different requirements.
What does “screen-free interface” mean?
It describes the main way children control the game: they make decisions and respond at the PODs. In Adventures, a phone or tablet runs the app and audio. Some educational materials in development also include illustrations on a tablet.
| Element | What does the child or adult do? |
|---|---|
| Controlling play | The child chooses and hits a POD. Physical action is the answer. |
| Running Adventures | An adult starts content in the app, which handles narration and sound. |
| Educational extensions | Some lessons in development may supplement tasks with tablet illustrations. |
Answering without watching a screen, needing no phone and working without internet are different properties. See the questions and answers for what is known about each mode's requirements.
One set, different worlds
The platform combines physical controllers with changeable content. As a child's interests change, further games can give the same PODs new uses. The project covers both short activities and narrated Adventures.
